The “European Union Water Initiative Plus for the Eastern Partnership” (EUWI+) project, together with the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, organises local dialogues on the draft law of Georgia on “Water resources management” and River Basin Management Plan interim results. The local dialogues will take place in Kvareli, Sighnaghi, Telavi, Sagarejo, Bolnisi, Tetritskaro and Tianeti municipalities from 13 to 16 May, 2019.
Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture, with the EUWI+ support, started  developing the Alaziani-Iori and Khrami-Debeda river basin management plans. The plans describes the environmental objectives for the river and the measures to achieve them.
As a continuation of the public consultation process, after the two consultation meetings held at regional level in Kakheti and Kvemo Kartli regions, public dialogue meetings will be organized at municipal level. Local dialogue will gather municipal representatives and local water stakeholders, as established by the European water framework directive, to seek their views on the future of Alazani/Iori or Khrami-Debeda River waters.
This public dialogue gives opportunity to allow the diverse perspectives of a range of local representatives to be articulated clearly and in public in order that future programme of measures can better reflect these views, concerns and aspirations and also to improve local authorities’ understanding of their role in the reform of water resources management process. This dialogue is very important and the results will be taken into account for the next steps to develop the river basin plan in order to define objectives, mesures and actions to achieve them.

A second consultation phase will be organised on the draft River Basin Management Plans and Programme of Measures in 2020.

Context:
Launched in September 2016 for a duration of four years, the EUWI+ project is the EU’s biggest commitment to the water sector in EaP countries. It supports the six partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine) to align their legislation with EU policy on water management, with a focus on transboundary rivers. It provides support to the development of a long-term vision of water sector reforms in the Partner Countries. The project is implemented by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), and an EU Consortium comprising the Austrian Environment Agency (Austria) and the International Office for Water (France).
