Project information
The contest is implemented within the framework of the program "Climate Driven Disaster Risk Reduction in Georgia," which aims to reduce the impact of natural threats to climate change on the population, environment, and infrastructure by providing a nationwide, multilateral early warning system (MHEWS) through informed action.
The seven-year initiative is funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and the governments of Sweden and Georgia.
The program is implemented in: 11 river basins (Enguri, Chorokhi-Adjaristskali, Supsa, Natanebi, Khobi, Kintrishi, Mtkvari, Aragvi, Khrami-Ktsia, Alazani and Iori basins) and includes 7 natural hazards: flood, drought, mudslide, mudflow strong wind and avalanches
The program will increase the resilience of the Georgian population to climate threats, reduce the impact of disasters on infrastructure and the environment, and provide 1.7 million people with better protection from floods, droughts, high water, and other climate change threats.
There are 3 main components of the program:
Expand the Climate Change Monitoring Network and strengthen modeling capabilities to provide reliable information on climate threats, vulnerabilities, and risks;
Support for effective multilateral early warning systems and creation of new climate-related information products through effective national regulations, coordination mechanisms, and institutional capacity;
Increase the resilience of the population at the community level through the implementation of a multi-threat early warning system and priority mitigation measures.
The education and awareness component of the program is implemented by the the eiec of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia. Within this component, the eiec actively cooperates with educational institutions, local civil society organizations, and self-government in the target municipality.
