The "On Biological Diversity" draft law was developed in Georgia to harmonize Georgian legislation with the European nature protection policy and to establish a legal foundation for the fulfillment of the obligations outlined in the Association Agreement with the European Union.
The specific goals of the draft Georgia law "On Biological Diversity" are to ensure:
• protection and long-term preservation of wild plants and wild animal species;
• protection and preservation of habitats through the development of the emerald network and the creation of protected areas included in international networks;
• Regulation of international trade in wild flora and fauna species;
• fair distribution of the benefits derived from the use of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge;
• Meeting commitments made under the Association Agreement between Georgia and the European Union, such as harmonizing the EU Directives 2009/147/EC on bird conservation and 92/43/EEC on natural habitats and wild flora and fauna.
Notes and comments on Georgia's draft law "On biological diversity" must be sent by December 7, 2023, at the latest. Mailing address: Mariam.Bikashvili@mepa.gov.ge
