Briefing state agencies and communities on GCF programme

As an effort of the “Reducing the risk of climate-driven disasters in Georgia” programme, a working meeting was hosted for the local municipalities and their respective dwellers; the latter initiative aspires to raise awareness and understanding among the public on risks of climate-change threats. The respective discussion was conducted by the Environmental Information and Education Centre (EIEC) under the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia (MEPA).

Climate risk management and reduction experts, Mr Irakli Kobulia and Mr Kakha Bakhtadze joined efforts with the representatives of city halls, city councils and community-based organizations for discussing best practices of financial and legislative remedies, as well as jointly drafted recommendations for developing community capacities.

Local mechanisms and approaches for the climate risk management system were also scrutinized during the session. Representatives of the respective agencies and organizations stressed out on the importance of engagement and participation, as well as touched upon possibilities for tackling challenges with regard to community capacities.

The programme has been funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Governments of Sweden and Georgia, and is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
