International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2020

International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2020

In connection with the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, a webinar "Ozone Layer and its Protection in Georgia" was held for "Ecoliders" and young people interested in environmental issues. In 2020, International Ozone Layer Day is dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Vienna Convention and the 35-year-old international cooperation and achievements of the Ozone Layer.

Louisa Winton, UNDP Resident Representative in Georgia, and Nino Tandilashvili, Deputy Minister of Environmental and Agriculture of Georgia, opened a remote meeting and addressed the participants.

At the webinar, Noe Megrelishvili, Head of the Atmospheric Air Division of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, spoke in detail about the problem of ozone depletion and the successful international experience of ozone protection and restoration. The speaker informed the audience about the implemented and planned actions to protect the ozone layer in the world and in Georgia, and assessed the current situation in this regard.

The meeting was interactive and the young people received comprehensive answers to their questions.
The webinar was organized by the Environmental Information and Education Centre of the Ministry of Environmental and Agriculture and the UNDP Action Plan for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol in Georgia.

In 1994, the UN General Assembly declared September 16 as the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer in connection with the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Ozone Layer, and this day is celebrated in 197 countries around the world. This year, International Ozone Day marks the 35th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol. This day reminds the whole world that we are committed to continuing to care for the protection of the ozone layer for the health of us and our planet.

In 1996, Georgia signed the Vienna Convention on the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The country has already taken steps to reduce its consumption of the most dangerous ozone-depleting substances - chlorine-fluorocarbons and hydrogen-chlorine-fluorocarbons. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is assisting the Government of Georgia in fulfilling this commitment.
