International Day to Combat Desertification 2020

June 17 is the International Day to Combat Desertification. This day is celebrated with different activities
in those countries which are parties of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

Celebrating the International Day to Combat Desertification, the Environmental Information and Education Centre (EIEC) of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia (MEPA), organized a webinar for the “Eco-leaders School” students.

The seminar was attended by up to 30 school students.

During the webinar, Director of EIEC Tamar Aladashvili spoke about the land degradation problem, pathways to combat it and activities planned/implemented in Georgia in this mater and underlined the importance of the awareness-raising and involvement of population of vulnerable municipalities as well as other stakeholders, especially the young people.

The seminar was led by the Executive Director of the Regional Environmental Center for the Caucasus (REC) Sopiko Akhobadze who discussed the existing challenges in Dedoplistskaro, Akhmeta and Gardabani Municipalities towards land degradation and ways to solve them.

The head of the Land Resources Division of MEPA Nino Chikovani who is a national focal person responsible for the UN Convention to Combat Desertification also participated in the seminar. She spoke about the international processes and the role of Georgia in global challenges.

“Eco-leaders school is an educational program launched by EIEC that aims to teach the young generation environmental issues and raise their awareness in this field.
