Meeting with regional coordinators

Within the framework of the project of the Environmental Information and Education Centre (EIEC) of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia (MEPA), the UN Development Program (UNDP) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), a work meeting has been held with the regional coordinators of the project.

The meeting was opened by the Director of EIEC Tamar Aladashvili who spoke about the importance of support for awareness-raising and capacity building in the process of reduction of climate change-driven natural disasters and implementation of planned activities.

On the work meeting, municipal representatives have been informed on the goals and objectives of the GCF funded project and activities implemented, running and planned under it. Those activities intend to enlarge the multi-hazards early-warning system and gain and use information related to climate change as well as to reduce the impact of the climate change-driven hazards on the living environment and infrastructure. The information gained through the meeting will help the representatives of municipalities to ensure the involvement and participation of the local governance, educational institutions, local media and community-based organizations in the project activities.

Along with the regional coordinators, the work meeting was participated by the experts of MEPA, EIEC, NEA (the National Environment Agency of Georgia), UNDP and UNEP.

The project “Reducing the Risk of Climate Change-driven Disasters in Georgia” with a budget of 74 million US$ will last 7 years and aims to reduce the risk of climate change-driven natural disasters, develop the early-warning system and implement an efficient national system for managing multi-faceted hazards that will ensure protection of 1.7 million people living in Georgia from flood, drought, avalanche and another climate change-driven natural disasters.
