Virtual Commemoration of the International Day for Biological Diversity

Virtual Commemoration of the International Day for Biological Diversity

A special webinar on “Biological Diversity Surrounding Us” has been hosted by the Environmental Information and Education Centre (EIEC) as one of the initiatives aiming at commemorating the International Day for Biological Diversity. The United Nations has proclaimed May 22 as the International Day for Biological Diversity, since 2000. Mr Zurab Gurieladze, Director of the Tbilisi Zoo and Professor of population ecology & conservation biology moderated the webinar and educated attendees on an importance of biological diversity, entailing all the challenges of embracing the latter in Georgia, as well as complementary actions and examples of tackling incumbent drawbacks. Attendees were also empowered to pose questions and enjoy feedback.

The slogan for the International Day for Biological Diversity in 2020 is “Our solutions are in nature”, which embraces the importance of being bound with the nature. Commemorating the respective Day and raising awareness among the public for adhering the latter – serves a purpose to reiterate the importance of building a future of life in harmony with nature.

Amidst the turmoil of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the EIEC has successfully paved a path, similar to other educational institutions, for switching to remote instruction mode. The International Day for Biological Diversity has also been celebrated remotely, entailing the following competitions: a contest among pupils on creative works “the role of biological diversity in our life”, as well as a competition on graphic posters on “our solutions are in nature’. Moreover, posters and tips aiming at raising awareness have been published – empowering the general public to familiarize themselves on the importance of biological diversity and key challenges, as well as inspiring each one of us to preserve biological diversity and safeguard the future generations with it.
