International Day of Forests

International Day of Forests

March 21 is International Forest Day to raise public awareness of the importance of the forest

As part of International Forest Day, the EIEC of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, organized an online information meeting.
The young people were informed by Carlo Amirgulashvili, Head of the Department of Biodiversity and Forestry of the Ministry of Environmental Protection  and Agriculture of Georgia, about the state of forests in Georgia. Nikoloz Karsimashvili, Head of the Environmental Protection Division of the Department of Roads of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, and Trainer of the EIEC spoke about the importance of greenery and urban forestry.
It should be noted that the Georgian Parliament authorized a new forest code in 2020. The new code, which is based on sustainable forest management principles, went into effect in 2021. The Code governs Georgia's sustainable forest ecosystem management, which includes the economic and social usage of forests while also considering their ecological roles.
43% of the territory of Georgia is covered with forests. 98% of them are of natural origin and have a high rate of biodiversity, which makes them unique both nationally and globally.
The United Nations General Assembly established International Forest Day in 1971.
