Representatives of the Geology Department of the National Environment Agency made a report on the history of the development of the field of geology in Georgia and the current situation at a webinar organised by the EIEC of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia. The young people were informed about natural geological events, assessment and prevention of related threats, geological research in Georgia, including monitoring of groundwater.
In Georgia, the first qualified geological works date back to 1841, and the first papers were published in 1843. Systematic geological surveys in Georgia originated in 1841 and continue to this day.
Work on the development of the field of geology is underway. In 2014-2021, a set of state geological maps of Eastern Georgia was published (scale: 1: 200 000), with relevant reports; In 2019, the Regional Geological Division of Western Georgia was established.
Since 2019, the Geology Department of the National Environment Agency has been actively involved in the international project: "Strengthening Climate Change Adaptation Capacities in Georgia (GCF / UNDP / SDC)", which plans to prepare geological hazard zoning maps for Georgia's 11 major river basins.
Geology Day has been celebrated in Georgia every year since 1965, on the first Sunday of April.
