The project "Understand Nature" from Khala Public School won second place in the contest "Learn in a Safe Environment "

For many years, a public school in the village of Khala, Kobuleti Municipality, has been engaged in environmental activities. The school eco-members club's and students participate in a variety of environmental projects and activities, as well as spreading knowledge about current issues in the community and cleaning the school yard and surrounding areas.

In 2020, the school participated in the contest "Learn in a Safe Environment," announced by the EIEC. The Khala Public School project "Understand Nature" won the second prize. The project aimed to raise awareness about the risk, management, and prevention of natural disasters.

Many interesting environmental activities were carried out within the project to reach the intended goal. One of the most essential aspects of the efforts was the planting of trees with strong root systems in landslide-prone locations.

"Our school is located near the river Chakvistskali, which poses a risk of floods and landslides. That is why the implementation of this project is especially important to us. Within the project, the school will strengthen the river bank and build a windbreak, which will protect the school from natural disasters,"-said the school principal, Leila Lortkipanidze.

It should be noted that within the project, a group of volunteers was formed, which was trained by the relevant specialists of the Batumi Red Cross.

At Khala Public School, we conducted a natural disaster management program, where we discussed the tasks to be carried out before, during, and after the disaster." We discussed the requirements of the local community as well as disaster protection methods during the session. "It is welcome to express readiness to develop further collaborative initiatives," said Giorgi Bolkvadze, a member of the Disaster Management Department of the Batumi Red Cross Organisation.

Landslide-prone locations were highlighted on the village map with the involvement of schoolchildren, and walnut, cedar, and oak seedlings were planted in landslide-prone areas to mitigate the negative effects.
