Within the framework of the project "Reducing the Risk of Climate-Driven Disasters in Georgia." The UNIDEP Regional Director visited the Kakheti region

Solomon Pavliashvili the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, together with  Miriana Spoliarich Eger,  the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, Assistant Administrator of the UNDP, and Head of the UNDP Regional Office for Europe and the CIS got acquainted with the ongoing project report  ‘’Reducing the Risk of Climate-Driven Disasters in Georgia’’.

The meeting was held with the winning students of the project "Learn is a Safe Environment,"  implemented within the project. In the village of Tsinandali, young people presented cognitive initiatives supporting raising awareness regarding climate change and environmental education. Miriana  Spoliarich and Solomon Pavliashvili inspected the ongoing shore protection and cleaning works on the Khodashniskhevi and on the Telaviskhevi rivers.

The arrival of the UN Assistant Secretary-General and familiarisation with the continuing work on Khodashaniskhevi and Telaviskhevi is critical. This is a preventative measure that will delay floods that can cause great damage to the region. ''At Tsinandali school, we noticed how much enthusiasm there is in the field of environmental education among young people at Tsinandali school, and we learned about the work that is being done on the ground, "Solomon Pavliashvili remarked.

"The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has worked with Georgia for 30 years, and we are very proud of our relationship. We will continue to assist the Government in meeting its European integration and long-term development objectives. "Strengthening institutions, protecting the environment, and focusing on climate change are all critical for the country's democratic transformation, "said Miriana Spoliarich Eger.

The program ‘’Reducing the Risk of Climate-Driven Disaster’’ in Georgia  is carried out with  a joint effort of the Georgia government and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and aims to adapt to climate change and reduce disaster risk. The program is financially supported by the Green Climate Fund and the governments of Georgia, Sweden, and Switzerland. Under the program, modern mechanisms for adapting to climate change, including hydrometeorological observation and early warning systems, should be introduced. Major construction will take place in 11 large river basins in Georgia, where the risk of disaster is particularly high. In addition, public awareness of climate change will increase.

Daniel Mevl, Regional Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in the South Caucasus, Mzia Giorgobiani, Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure, Irakli Shioshvili State Representative in the Kakheti Region, and Tamar Aladashvili, Head of the EIEC,attended the meeting.
