An information meeting was held on the establishment of local disaster risk reduction management councils

A working meeting was organised by the EIEC of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia within the framework of the project "Reducing the risk of climate-driven disasters in Georgia." The meeting, where the issues of establishing disaster risk reduction management councils were discussed, was opened by the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Solomon Pavliashvili.

One of the main goals of the project "Reducing the risk of climate-driven disasters in Georgia" is to create a system that prioritises risk reduction, preventive measures, public awareness, raising awareness, and responsibility. To do this, it is crucial to strengthen the capacity of municipalities, for which the EIEC will plan workshops, and pieces of training and encourage community initiatives. For the successful implementation of the project, it is important for local governments to work closely with the project implementing agencies at the central level. One of the ways to achieve this goal is to set up disaster risk reduction management councils, "Solomon Pavliashvili said.

One of the important activities of the project "Reducing the Risk of Climate-Driven Disasters in Georgia" is the preparation of local response and preparedness plans implemented by the Emergency Management Agency.

Project experts discussed community-based disaster risk management and the role of local self-government in disaster risk reduction, as well as summarised project activities.

The event was attended by Nino Antadze, UNDP Resident and Energy Officer; Mariam Shelegia, Coordinator of the Government Administration's Regions Department; Tamar Aladashvili, Director of the EIEC; and mayors and representatives of the target municipalities ( (Lagodekhi, Akhmeta, Signagi, Telavi, Gori, Samtredia, Abasha, Khobi, Senaki and Kobuleti)

The Climate Driven Disaster Risk Reduction Program in Georgia is funded by the Government of Georgia, the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the Government of Switzerland, and the Government of Sweden, and is implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
