An information meeting on "Rules of Forest Use" was organised by the Eiec of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, with the support of the Georgian Farmers' Association.The meeting was started by Tamar Aladashvili, Director of the Eiec.
Is it legal for a farmer to harvest non-timber forest products for his or her own use? What is a non-timber forest product made from plant raw materials? Which state agency offers a specific permission to gather non-timber forest products for commercial purposes, and what grounds might a non-timber forest product application be given? At the conference, the farmers were given detailed information on all of the above-mentioned difficulties.
The representative of the Department of Biodiversity and Forestry of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia paid special attention to the new rules of forest use and explained in which areas the local population can graze cattle and whether it is permissible to produce timber with a ticket. -approval of a special right for forest use for agricultural purposes.
It should be noted that the Georgian Parliament approved a new Forest Code in May 2020, which is based on internationally recognized principles and establishes a foundation for the phase-out of social logging and the replacement of sustainable forests. The legal basis for issuing long-term licences for timber production will be abolished, new forms of forest ownership will be established, and multi-purpose forest use, including the use of forests for forestry, will be possible.
