The project "Reducing the Risk of Climate-Driven Disasters Caused by Climate Change in Georgia" will begin this year in the municipalities of Lanchkhuti, Chokhatauri, and Ozurgeti in addition to the current target municipalities (Gori, Lagodekhi, Sighnaghi, Telavi, Akhmeta, Samtredia, Abasha, Senaki, Khobi, and Kobuleti). An informational meeting was organized to introduce the proposal to the municipal leaders. The actions to be carried out at the level of municipalities and communities were introduced to the interested parties at the meeting.
The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Solomon Pavliashvili, spoke at the meeting about the importance of the involvement of representatives of local municipalities in the successful implementation of the project.
Participants talked about the value of locally based risk management, hazards maps created as part of the program, and planned and executed awareness-raising activities.
The meeting was attended by Giorgi Urushadze, State Commissioner in the Guria Region, Zaza Shavadze, Minister of Agriculture of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Tamar Aladashvili, Director of the EIEC, Ketevan Skhireli, GCF Project Coordinator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the interested public.
The programme "Reducing the risk of climate disasters caused by climate change in Georgia" is financed by the government of Georgia, the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the governments of Switzerland and Sweden, and its implementation is ensured by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
