The meeting "Aarhus Convention: Effective Community Participation for Good Governance, a Healthy Environment, and Sustainable Development" was held

The "Aarhus Convention: Effective Public Participation for Good Governance, a Healthy Environment, and Sustainable Development" meeting was held in Tashkent. Representatives of environmental protection ministries and Aarhus centres of the countries party to the Aarhus Convention took part in the meeting.

The objective of the meeting was to provide best practise examples on how crucial it is for nations, international organisations, and society to apply the principles of the Aarhus Convention.

The meeting in the Republic of Uzbekistan was attended by Tamar Aladashvili, director of the Environmental Information and Education Centre, and Nino Gokhelashvili, director of the Sustainable Development Division of the Environment and Climate Change Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.

Nino Gokhelashvili, the national person responsible for the Aarhus Convention in Georgia, gave a presentation on the implementation of the Aarhus Convention in the context of community involvement in the environmental decision-making process and genetically modified organisms. Tamar Aladashvili, director of the Environmental Information and Education Centre, made a report on the importance of Aarhus centres, the institutional arrangement of the Environmental Information and Education Centre, the ongoing programmes in Georgia in terms of access to environmental education and information, and the promotion of the Aarhus Convention.

The OSCE, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) organised the meeting in Tashkent, Republic of Uzbekistan, in coordination with the Uzbek Ministry of Natural Resources.
