The Project for ‘’climate-driven disaster risk reduction in Georgia’’ will be implemented in addition to 12 municipalities

The project for ‘Reducing the risk of Climate-Driven Disasters in Georgia’’ with existing targeted municipalities (Gori, Lagodekhi, Sighnaghi, Telavi, Akhmeta, Samtredia, Abasha, Senaki, Khobi, Kobuleti, Ozurgeti, Lanchkhuti, and Chokhachatauri) will also be implemented in municipalities such as Suakhevi, Khulo, Khelvachauri, Mestia, Ckhorotsku, Ambrolauri, Oni, Zestaphoni, Sachkhere, Chiatura, Khoni, and Martvili.

The meeting was opened by Ekaterine Bendeliani, the Deputy Director of the Environmental Information and Education Centre (EIEC), and Anna Chernishova, the Deputy Head of the United Nations Development Program in Georgia (UNDP). The importance of the opportunities for the local communities was discussed at the meeting.

Participants discussed the importance of community-based risk management, hazard maps prepared within the program, and activities to be implemented.

Within ‘’the Reducing the risk of climate-driven disasters in Georgia’’  project have to be implemented modern mechanisms for adaptation to climate change, as well as hydrological observation and early warning systems. The main activities will be implemented in 11 large river basins in Georgia, where disaster risks are extremely high. In addition, public awareness of climate change will increase

The meeting was attended by Zaza Shavadze, the Minister of Agriculture of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Vasil Gedevanishvili, the head of the National Environment Agency, and the interested public.

The project "Reducing the risk of climate-driven disasters in Georgia" is funded by the Government of Georgia, the Green Climate Fund (GCF), and the governments of Switzerland and Sweden, and its implementation is ensured by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
